Due to a weak response yesterday, I'll ask again today. Who's there? Who's going? I'll be making my trip up this afternoon. I didn't realize it, but it sounds like you have to buy tickets to watch. I thought you would just be able to walk around and check it out. Anyone know if you can just hike up and pick a place? Any advice at all would be helpful.

I think you can just hike (drive) in and just pick a spot. After you've bought your ticket that is.
P. S. It's worth driving all the way to the top just to give yourself an idea of why pikes peak is so amazing. The drive is so steep and so long that you'll never think of it the same again.

I have no idea. Please let us know. I imagine you have to get dropped off, or walk up early, as there's only a handfull of places to park.

I'm heading up today ... you can hike up the backside for free tickets are $40 and we are getting in line tonight . The race starts tomorrow at 7:30 am they are severely limiting where you can watch this year I assume due to the asshats that jogged in front of Seb Loeb last year and Paul D. taking out sections of fence 2 years ago . Its worth the $40 to get in to watch . we will be at Cove creek for the 3rd year in a row I think its the best of High altitude and watching.

They close the upper sections first . Devils Playground about 4-5 am or basically when it fills . then Cove creek . Remember they have camping permits also so some people are already there . so depending oh how many tickets sold they are only allowing 1300 cars on the mountain this year.

Wow. Ok I think we'll get in line around 1 or 2. I was looking on Google street view and Cove Creek looks like a better viewing spot and less people like you said. I'll see you there. ;)

Actually I think we'll get down there at 8 pm. It would suck not to get on the mountain.

Opposauruswrx is talking about Mt Washington, not Pike's Peak...

Seems like everyone thinks you're talking about Pike's. You can drive to the top and hike down, but you need to be there early to do so: road opens at 6 am, closes at 8. The Cog Rail may be bringing people to the top as well, but I can't guarantee it. I think the shuttle tickets are sold out, but can't say for sure about that either. Worst case there's a spectator point about three turns up from the base paddock that you can hike to.

were planning on hiking up and down. I wasn't sure if we'd still need a ticket.
